Djurs Sommerland is launching Northern Europe's first Hot Racer Roller Coaster in 2027
Djurs Sommerland is investing more than DKK 100 million in Europe’s tallest and fastest Hot Racer roller coaster – a new type of coaster that will be the only one of its kind in Denmark and across Northern Europe. It will also be the first roller coaster at Djurs Sommerland to feature inversions, turning riders upside down – a long-awaited guest request.
Something big has been taking shape. The foundations have been laid, anticipation has been growing, and now it is official.
In 2027, Danish and international families can look forward to Midgårdsormen at Djurs Sommerland, a new themed roller coaster in Vikingeland, which is being expanded by 15,000 square metres.
With a top speed of 75 km/h, three inversions, two launches and a bespoke layout featuring carefully selected ride elements, it will become one of the most significant attractions in the park’s history.
First inversions ever at Djurs Sommerland
“It will be the first time our guests experience inversions on a roller coaster at Djurs Sommerland. It marks an important milestone for the park and represents a major expansion of our coaster line-up with an entirely new ride experience,” says CEO Henrik B. Nielsen.
Midgårdsormen will also become the park’s tenth roller coaster, further strengthening Djurs Sommerland’s position as the amusement park in Scandinavia with the largest and most diverse collection of roller coasters.
A new type Roller Coaster
Developed in partnership with Swiss manufacturer Intamin AG, one of the world’s leading ride suppliers, Midgårdsormen is based on a design that differs from traditional roller coasters.
Guests ride in trains featuring a single seat per row, travelling on one large central rail. This configuration allows for faster directional changes and delivers a more dynamic and intense ride experience. Throughout the 603-metre journey, riders will experience continuous speed, rapid transitions and moments of weightlessness.
“Our focus has been on combining excitement with broad appeal. The result is an attraction that many guests will feel confident riding again and again,” says Henrik B. Nielsen.
Midgårdsormen has been designed as a family thrill coaster, and with a minimum height requirement of 120 cm, it will be accessible to a large proportion of the park’s visitors.
Expansion of Vikingeland
Midgårdsormen will become a new flagship attraction within Vikingeland and forms part of a major expansion of the area, featuring theming developed to an international standard.
At the same time, Vikingeland will be enhanced with new dining experiences, a large playground and a new retail outlet. The area also offers opportunities for future expansion with additional attractions.
The existing roller coaster Thor’s Hammer, which opened in 2002 and remains one of the park’s most popular rides, will continue to play a central role within the expanded themed area.
“We are building on an area that our guests already love. This is an investment in the continued development of the entire Vikingeland experience,” says Henrik B. Nielsen.
A new adventure - inspired by Norse mythology
Midgårdsormen draws inspiration from Norse mythology, where the great sea serpent lies hidden beneath the ocean before suddenly setting the world in motion.
That story has been transformed into a roller coaster experience that combines speed, rapid changes of direction and moments that challenge riders’ sense of orientation. The ride is characterised by movements that feel unexpected, dynamic and immersive.
“For brief moments, guests will feel as though the world around them is out of balance. That is exactly what makes the ride intense, fun and unlike anything else in the park,” says Henrik B. Nielsen.
Developed in collaboration with international experts
The concept behind Midgårdsormen has been developed in collaboration with international specialists from Dutch design company Leisure Expert Group, a long-standing partner of Djurs Sommerland for more than a decade.
The partnership has played a key role in the development of the park’s themed areas and its high-quality guest experiences.
“We are committed to developing our attractions alongside some of the best specialists in the industry. This ensures that we deliver outstanding quality while creating experiences that truly stand out,” says Henrik B. Nielsen.
Part of a larger vision
Midgårdsormen is more than just a new roller coaster. It is an important step in the continued development of Djurs Sommerland.
The ambition is to further strengthen the park as a destination where guests want to stay longer, experience more and return again and again.
“Our most important measure of success is guest satisfaction. Everything we develop should make a real difference to the experience our guests have with us,” concludes Henrik B. Nielsen.
